What Is the International Day of Play?

The International Day of Play is a relatively new global observance, first declared by the United Nations in 2023. The goal? To formally recognize play as a fundamental right of every child, and to encourage communities around the world to create space for it.

According to the UN and partner organizations like UNICEF, play is more than fun—it’s essential. Experts say it builds creativity, strengthens social bonds, supports emotional regulation, and even improves academic performance.

For younger children, play is directly linked to how they learn and understand the world around them. For older kids and even adults, it reduces stress and boosts overall well-being.

That’s why June 11 is now set aside worldwide to celebrate play in all its forms—whether that’s a game of tag, painting on a sidewalk, or blowing giant bubbles.

Inside the Philbrook Day of Play

This year marked Tulsa’s first official participation in the International Day of Play, as the Philbrook Museum of Art turned its galleries and gardens into a playground for the day.

The museum hosted a wide range of activities—from hands-on art stations and scavenger hunts inside the galleries, to lawn games and music performances outside in the gardens. But one attraction stood out: the bubble station, where kids used oversized whisks to create massive, floating orbs.

“To have giant bubbles, you need a giant whisk,” said Jenny Fisher, Senior Manager of Youth & Family Audiences at Philbrook.

Beyond the fun, organizers emphasized a deeper message: that museums can—and should—be welcoming spaces for children, and that play belongs even in traditional art institutions.

“I hope they come here and feel free and feel like they can be themselves,” Fisher said.

Philbrook expected up to 1,200 visitors for the Day of Play. But for the museum, success wasn’t just about turnout—it was about changing perceptions and reminding families that play is for everyone.

“Engaging in play reduces stress, improves wellness, and makes us happier people,” Fisher said. “What’s not to love?”
