A man is expected to recover after Tulsa Police say he was shot by an officer while attacking them with a shovel and a large stick during an arrest attempt for violating a protective order.

Officers responded around 7 p.m. Sunday to a home near Pine Street and Sheridan Road, where a woman reported that her estranged husband was at her residence, refusing to leave, making threats, and acting aggressively.

Police say the suspect, identified as 50-year-old Clayton Baldwin, was found in the backyard. When officers arrived, he allegedly charged at them with a shovel and a large stick, refusing commands to drop the weapons.

An officer deployed a taser, but police say it was ineffective. A second attempt to subdue Baldwin with a Taser also failed. Officers say Baldwin continued making threatening movements, prompting a second officer to fire her weapon, striking him in the torso.

Police say officers immediately rendered aid before Baldwin was taken to the hospital. He is expected to survive.

Once released, police say Baldwin will be arrested on several charges, including violation of a protective order, multiple counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, and interfering with an emergency 911 call, according to investigators.

The officer who fired the weapon has been placed on administrative leave. Police say all evidence will be reviewed by the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office as part of the ongoing investigation.

No officers were injured in the incident.
