A man was gunned down outside a Tulsa Boys and Girls Club camp. It happened around 4:30 on Monday near 31st Street North and Cincinnati. News On 6's Chris Wright reports a 22-year-old man, Robert Lee Holmes, Jr. was killed near the basketball court at the Mabee Center.
Police are now trying to figure out if this killing is retaliation for other recent shootings.
The Tulsa Police Department says a car pulled into the parking lot, where the victim was hanging out with some friends. Police say those in the car then opened fire.
The victim was the only person hurt, which police say is amazing considering how many kids were in the area.
"For someone to be so irresponsible and exchange shots when kids were in the area, you certainly can't speak to that without saying that is anything but stupid," said Chief Ron Palmer with the Tulsa Police Department.
This killing is the latest in a string of recent shootings in the area. Most notably, 18-year-olds Teontae Ray and Tajuan Davis were found dead last week.
"I just didn't spend enough time with my son," said Terry Ray, Teontae Ray's father.
Police are now investigating whether the two shootings are connected.
"We don't know that yet. We'll look at that angle certainly. We aren't saying that for sure yet, but it possibly could be," said Chief Palmer.
Shortly after Monday's shooting, three people were taken into custody after their car was stopped near 31st Street North and Zion. Police say their vehicle matched the description given by a number of witnesses.
Chief Palmer says the department is concerned about escalating violence in the area and patrols will be stepped up in an effort to avoid more scenes like this one.
There is a playground at the Mabee Center near where the victim was shot. Police say that fortunately, no kids were playing on it at the time.
