Grateful Tulsan Helps Raise Walls Of Habitat For Humanity Home

A Tulsa woman and her family are a giant step closer to being homeowners as Habitat for Humanity raised the wall of their new home. Victoria Wilson was there Saturday morning, working along side the volunteers who are making her dream possible.

She was at an Asbury Methodist Church function when she made the prayer that would change her life.

"I put in a prayer for my daughter and I to be homeowners, and five years later - here we are," she said. "I never thought that this late in life, that this would happen to me, but I'm just glad that it did. To me, it's right on time."

Victoria's home is being built over the next 12 weeks as Whirlpool employees and Asbury volunteers devote their Saturdays to construction. Jane Dunbar of Habitat for Humanity says the build is just the most visible part of a long process their applicants go through.

Prospective homeowners like Victoria Wilson attend money management workshops and other classes to prepare them for taking on the 20-year, zero-interest loan that comes with the new home.

"They're very dedicated and very excited," Dunbar told News On 6.

For Wilson, it's a chance to see her family - which includes a daughter and two sons - have a place of their own to be proud of, and a place where someday, her grandchildren will play.

"If I ever get any," she added.

Whirlpool has partnered with Habitat for Humanity for 13 years, sponsoring over 100 homes around the world. This is the 15th home that Asbury Methodist volunteers have sponsored.
