“It's always disheartening when somebody loses their lives,” Opgrande said.
The superintendent of Harrah Public Schools says Butler was a student at Harrah High School.
Extra counselors were on hand at the school Friday, as students mourned the loss of their peer.
According to the superintendent, Butler was bright, kind and funny.
The crash happened early Thursday evening.
Butler was a passenger in the truck going northbound on Peebly Road.
“We believe that they failed to stop at the stop sign and collided with a van that was going westbound on Britton Road with three individuals inside,” Opgrande said.
Everyone involved in the crash was taken to the hospital.
Butler and the driver of the van were rushed by helicopter, but it was too late to save Butler’s life.
Opgrande says the patients are providing interviews to help investigators piece the crash together.
Preliminary information shows Butler and the truck's driver may not have been wearing seatbelts.
“From what I was told on the scene, it looked like a survivable crash if you're wearing a seatbelt. Again, it's preliminary of whether or not they were wearing seatbelts,” Opgrande said.
As to the cause of the crash itself, Opgrande says it will take some time to determine exactly why and how it happened.
Investigators don't think alcohol was involved but say speed may have been.
Harrah Schools also confirms the driver of the truck is a recent graduate of Harrah High School.
