News 9 has confirmed three lawmakers from Oklahoma were in Turkey at the time of the assassination of Russian ambassador Andrey Karlov.
Senator James Lankford and Congressmen Steve Russell and Markwayne Mullin were actually in Ankara, Turkey, at the time of the attack. The three were on a Congressional Delegation Trip.
The killing came after days of protests by people who were angry over Moscow's support for Syrian President Bashar Assad and Russia's actions in Aleppo.
Senator Lankford's office released a statement just hours ago:
"Senator Lankford condemns the assassination of Ambassador Andrey Karlov in the strongest terms. As Senator Lankford met with government officials in Turkey, the threat of terrorism and regional instability was a consistent topic of conversation and a very real concern to our allies."
Lankford's office tells us they were also flying to Germany at the time of the Christmas Market attack.
We now know all three are home safely.
