OKC High School Student Helps Woman After Hit-And-Run

A Southeast High School senior pulled an elderly woman from her car after a crash outside the school, and Oklahoma City police said the driver left the scene.

Just days before winter break, 69-year-old Dorothy Barber stopped by to pick up a basket of food the students had put together for her Monday morning.

When she left, she said she looked three times before pulling out of the driveway.

Then, a Suburban and her Kia collided. Barber said that impact sent her up over the curb and into a power pole.

Manny Palma, 17, was just returning from Metro Tech and heard the crash.

“Something just told me, ‘Go for it. Do the best you can and help whoever is in that car,’” Palma explained.

He said he dropped his bags and bolted to the car. The driver side door was jammed shut and she couldn't get out.

So, he said he lifted her over the center console and out through the passenger door.

“She was alright. She could walk. I helped her inside the building to make sure she was OK,” he said.

Barber said she's grateful Palma took care of her until more help arrived. Palma said it's just the "spartan way."

“I thank him because … a lot of people wouldn’t do something like that,” Barber told News 9.

Unfortunately, that food basket Dorothy picked up is still stuck in her car while they await repairs. Police have not made any arrests in the case.
