A multi-county grand jury recommend several procedural changes but no criminal charges against the detention officers involved in a deadly alteration with an inmate at the Caddo County Jail.
Darius Robinson, 41, died on April 5, just days after being arrested on four child support warrants. Authorities say Robinson was attempting to escape when an altercation took place between him and the detention officers. During the scuffle staff reported Robinson stopped breathing.
An autopsy report later listed Robinson’s cause of death as asphyxiation due to manual compression of the neck. In addition, Robinson also suffered a broken neck, several hemorrhages and abrasions from his handcuffs.
The District Attorney’s office in Caddo County issued the following statement on the grand jury’s recommendations:
“Darius Robinson died while in the custody of the Caddo County Sheriff’s Department at the Caddo County Jail. An investigation into Robinson’s death was immediately requested by Sheriff Lennis Miller. The request was made to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. The request to the OSBI was made by Sheriff Miller so that there would be an independent investigation conducted into Robinson’s death. Upon completion of the investigation, the reports were forwarded to District Attorney Jason Hicks.
Upon review of the report, Hicks requested time to appear before the Fifteenth Multi-County Grand Jury. The matter was presented to the Multi-County Grand Jury and their findings have been made public. Hicks declined further comment.”
