Four Gun Control Measures Fail In Senate

U.S. Senators voted on competing proposals to keep guns out of terrorists' hands and all four proposals went down in defeat.

All the proposals were meant to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists, but all failed in the gridlocked Senate.

Republicans defeated Democratic plans to expand background checks on firearms bought online and at gun shows, and a proposal to stop people on the no-fly list and terrorist watch list from buying guns.

Meanwhile, Democrats stopped Republican proposals which would have required a 72-hour window for a court order that shows probable cause to block gun sales.

Also, a plan to allow the mentally ill to challenge their diagnosis in order to buy guns was defeated.

The NRA led lobbying efforts against gun regulations, saying the focus is misplaced.

"Laws didn't stop them in Boston. Laws didn't stop them in San Bernardino, where you had every type of gun control law that you could have. And they didn't stop them in Paris, where people can't even own guns," said Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice President, National Rifle Association.

Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine has proposed a compromise plan to ban people on the no-fly list, but not terror watch list from buying guns.

However, her proposal has not been scheduled for a vote.
