News 9 In the Neighborhood has partnered with OKC Energy FC and the Regional Food Bank to host a Food for Kids "Fill the Truck" event outside Taft Stadium, home of the OKC Energy FC soccer team.
Soccer Fans are encouraged to bring food to donate to the Food for Kids campaign before kickoff against the Real Monarchs SLC, May 24. The truck will be outside the stadium from 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm.
The first 100 fans to make a donation will receive fun giveaways from News 9 and the Energy. The team will also give one lucky family a VIP experience with the Energy Head Coach, Jimmy Nielsen, and two of the Energy players.
Over one-third of the Regional Food Bank's emergency food recipients on a weekly basis are children. There is a critical connection between childhood nutrition, cognitive and physical development. Even nutritional deficiencies of a short-term nature negatively impact a child's health, behavior, and the ability to concentrate and perform complex tasks. Going without food can cause behavioral and psychological effects such as depression, aggression, anxiety, and poor social skills.Food is the most essential school supply.
When Hunger Ends, Learning Begins. Food for Kids currently has four programs to help combat this problem: The Backpack Program, Kid's Cafe, the Summer Feeding Program and School Pantries, a pilot program launched at Putnam City West that will be expanding to middle and high schools very soon.
