Oklahoma Christian University Men's Basketball Coach Reflects On Career

The State's winningest coach is calling quits.

Saturday will be the final game for Oklahoma Christian men's basketball coach Dan Hays. We sat down with the coach as he reflects back on his career.

Over the years players and fans come and go. But for the past three decades, one thing has stayed the same.

"I can't believe I've been in that office for 33 years," said OC coach Dan Hays.

Forty-eight total, if you count from start to finish for Oklahoma Christian coach Dan Hays.

"All I ever wanted to do was play and coach. Ever since elementary school. I've never had any other goals. Any other desires," Hays said.

A love of the game that blocks out his ego and his giant logo when he does  his daily task.

"I was the little kid who swept the floors. And so I’ve always done that so I can remember where I started," Hays said.

And where's ending. Over 700 career wins, two gold medals in the Junior Olympics and he's closing the playbook as the state's winningest coach.

"I'll be 70 years old next fall. And that number has kind of haunted me, so I just really don't want to be a head coach at age 70," said Coach Hays. "My mind right now is racing. It's the first time in almost 50 years I don’t know what I’m going to do. The good Lord has always taken care of me and I’ve got faith something good will happen."

A humble approach, from a living legend.

"I'm just thankful. I don't know if humble is the word. I'm just me,” Hays said.

Coach does know one thing, he wants to still be involved with basketball, whether that be skills coach or just helping somebody.
