My 2 Cents: The Intern

A movie this weekend got me to thinking, which is pretty rare for Hollywood these days.

It's a movie about a 70-year-old widower, who's tired of traveling the world alone, and wants a new challenge, and gets one as an intern with an Internet clothing company. 

It's kind of a pilot program for the company which is run by 20-somethings, and they're all a little unsure with this senior citizen suddenly in their hip workplace.

I watched it, twice. Both times with my young adult daughters and I was touched by how charmed they were by Robert DeNiro's portrayal of Ben Whittaker in "The Intern."

Though out of his element, Ben's young co-workers come to see him as a mentor, a man from a different era and different culture steeped in work ethic, kindness, character and wisdom.

I love that they begin to imitate him, even his gentlemanly fashion sense, and that he models chivalry and confidence without being overbearing.

Those elements of manhood are fading away.

At one point, his young and beautiful boss, who's slightly intoxicated is talking to Ben and three young male co-workers, and she says to the young men, 

"Look at Ben here. A dying breed... Look and learn 'cause if you ask me... This is what cool is."

I like that.
