OKC Woman Unexpectedly Goes Into Labor At Home Christmas Morning

An unexpected Christmas morning gift for one metro family, as a woman goes into quick labor at their home near Lake Hefner. 

Jenny Cook, 32, woke up with labor pain and contractions right at 5 a.m. Christmas morning.  While her husband Brett gathered their belongings to get to OU Children’s Hospital, it became clear there wasn’t any time.

Brett Cook called 911, and EMSA and Oklahoma City Firefighters from Station 30 responded in about seven minutes.  They ended up delivering 6 pound 8 ounce Lucy Bell Cook in the family’s living room.  

Brett Cook said he was impressed with their professionalism.  “They were cool.  I mean they like have done it a thousand times,” he said. “And uh did a great job. I stopped my brief medical career at that point, and moved to the other side of the bed.” 

The Cooks were in good hands. 

Oklahoma City Fire Major Steve Peters supervised the firefighters’ part of the delivery operation.  He’s delivered the goods before, as a relief pitcher for Whitey Herzog and the St. Louis Cardinals, during their run to the World Series in 1987. 

“I looked up at the grandparents, they had tears in their eyes, the dad had tears in his eyes, and the mom was also joyful, because that feels much better,” he said from Fire Station 30 Friday afternoon.
