The Edmond Public Schools District is mourning the loss of a third-grader, who died in a car accident Saturday night.
According to the school district, Cross Timbers Elementary third-grader Landen Smith died from injuries he sustained in a car accident at 63rd and Douglas in Oklahoma City.
School officials said five counselors, along with district personnel, are at Cross Timbers Elementary School on Monday to provide support to students and staff members as they cope with this tragic loss. Counselors will remain at the school all week for support.
“Landen was a very bright, energetic and affectionate child who had many friends. The entire Cross Timbers Elementary community is deeply saddened to learn of his death and their hearts go out to the Smith family members as they cope with this devastating loss,” said Public Information Officer Susan Parks-Schlepp.
Cross Timbers’ administrators said they personally called the parents of Landen's classmates Sunday afternoon, and sent a letter to all Cross Timbers’ families informing them about Landen's death. The purpose of the letter was to allow parents an opportunity to discuss the loss with their children in whatever way they believed to be most appropriate.
