The Sooners are now 7-1 on the season after taking down a winless Kansas team with a score of 62-7. Here’s the instant analysis of how it happened.
How OU won
This ballgame was never in doubt as the Sooners hit the Jayhawks in the mouth from the kick of this one. Baker Mayfield threw for 332 yards and three touchdowns while Sterling Shepard caught 10 passes for 174 yards and a score—all in the first half. Oklahoma led 38-7 at intermission and never looked back.
Shep's huge half & more Mayfield brilliance has #OU in position to get starters out early. Can't afford injuries like OG Alvarez, a killer.

Mayfield finished with 383 yards and four touchdowns and Shepard added another catch to get his receiving total to 183 yards.
What the Sooners could’ve done better
After a perfect start in the first six games of the season, kicker Austin Seibert has now missed field goal attempts in two consecutive games. The true freshman missed a 31-yard chip shot on OU’s first drive, but was able to redeem himself in the second quarter with a 46-yard make.
A miss against Texas Tech and Kansas is no big deal, but those mistakes need to get figured out moving forward. Missing field goals against teams like Baylor, TCU and OSU may come back to hurt the Sooners.
Game ball
It would be easy to give it to someone on the offense because there were a handful of players with incredible stats, but this week’s game ball goes to defensive end Charles Tapper. The senior totaled three sacks on the day and two forced fumbles. Tapper was a headache for the KU offensive line, and if he can continue to dominate the line of scrimmage moving forward the OU defensive front will be in good shape.
What’s next?
The Sooners will be back in Norman on Saturday when they host Iowa State with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
