An Oklahoma City state lawmaker says earthquake preparedness needs to be mandatory in Oklahoma public schools.
State Rep. Mike Shelton represents the 97th District. Three years ago, he authored a bill just like the one he plans to reintroduce during the next legislative session.
“We’ve had 923 earthquakes just this year,” he said Monday. “Just last week, we had a 4.5 in the state of Oklahoma.”
When Shelton presents his proposal, fellow state Rep. Ann Coody will definitely consider it.
“I think I would need to talk to educators, because you know we’ve just given them so many things to do. They have so much to do, and some of them say they’d like to have more time for school, instead of all these things we give them to do,” she said from Lawton Monday afternoon.
