Researchers are reviewing a collection of jail ledgers from the 19th century in the Oklahoma County Jail basement.
Included in the rows of books in the basement was the very first sheriff's ledger from 1890 to 1896. Deputy Bradley Wynn, Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office's resident historian said he hopes to find some form of grant to allow them to remove the ledgers from the basement and protect and preserve them in a new location upstairs.
Some of the most fascinating pages, Wynn said in a Facebook post, contained records of who was arrested, their offense, its date, sentencing and disposition. "An amazing find in the basement of the Oklahoma County Jail," Wynn's post stated.
Jail calendars and journals were in the basement.
