To protect and serve comes at a high cost as an Oklahoma Highway Patrolman. Trooper Nicholas Dees was hit and killed and another trooper was injured when they were hit by a car while working a wreck.

It happened about 10 p,m. Saturday on Interstate 40 east of Shawnee. Three people were injured in the ordeal, and one lost his life.

“I would like to ask all of us and the people of Oklahoma to join our Oklahoma Highway Patrol family in recognizing and mourning the loss of Trooper Dees and certainly to pray for the quick recovery of Trooper Burch,” Governor Mary Fallin said. “Join me in a moment of silence please.”

A moment of silence during Fallin's State of the State Address remembered Trooper Nicholas Dees.

Dees just graduated from the academy in 2013 following in the footsteps of his father who is a retired trooper.

The accident happened Saturday night as Dees and another trooper, Keith Burch, were investigating a jack-knifed semi when a car hit that semi and both troopers.

The man behind the wheel of that vehicle was Steven Wayne Clark.

He was treated and just released from the hospital.

Authorities said he was not immediately charged with any crime, and their investigation continued as they work to find out how and why Clark left the roadway in the first place.

Dees injuries were too severe to survive, and Burch has undergone several surgeries and is still recovering in the hospital.
