One of the most popular players on the Oklahoma football roster appears to be heading elsewhere.
Running back David Smith, known as “Sooner Dave” amongst his teammates (and coach Bob Stoops!), could be heading back home to play in Illinois, possibly for the Illini. Smith is from Midlothian, Ill.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield posted a picture on Instagram Thursday afternoon with a caption saying he would miss Smith and was excited to see what he would do in Illinois.
The redshirt sophomore running back played in just one game during him time in Norman. That came this year against Iowa State, when he ran for 76 yards on 10 carries with a touchdown.
The Sooners have a loaded backfield already with Samaje Perine, Alex Ross and Keith Ford earning most of the carries. Daniel Brooks has only seen action in a mop-up role, and the Sooners are set to add Joe Mixon and incoming freshman Rodney Anderson of Katy, Texas in the fall.
