After studying the video and considering what happened during the final minute of the Douglass/Locust Grove high school football playoff game, I've done an about face.
Wednesday afternoon the OSSAA Board denied Douglass High School's appeal and ruled that Locust Grove will advance to the semi-finals. I think they got it wrong.
Nobody denies Douglass's go-ahead touchdown here should have counted and the sideline interference penalty that was flagged should have been assessed on the next play. It's the playoffs. It was almost certainly a game deciding blown call. And special circumstances sometimes require special measures.
Because of the high stakes, and because it was unquestionably wrong, the OSSAA should have let the teams re-play the last minute of that game.
Douglass will plead with a judge to step in on Thursday. I hope one does.
One other note, I was disappointed to see a legislator and a few community leaders inject race into this. The lawmaker claiming there have been multiple incidents where primarily minority schools in the metro have been oppressed by referees.
Don't we have enough issues involving race right now without lobbing a football into it? It wasn't oppression, but it was a right-able wrong. It should be made right.
