Oklahoma freshman running back Samaje Perine has been named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week after he set the FBS single-game rushing yardage record with a 427-yard, five-touchdown performance in a 44-7 victory vs. Kansas.
The Pflugerville, Texas, native has rushed for 640 yards over the past two weeks, the best total in consecutive games in Oklahoma history. He's also scored eight rushing touchdowns over that two-game stretch. Perine has earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors three times this season after producing the only three 200-yard rushing efforts in the Big 12 Conference this season. In addition to a 213-yard, three-TD performance at Texas Tech, he had a 242-yard, four-touchdown performance at West Virginia. Only Billy Sims has produced more 200-yard games in a single season for the Sooners, registering four such games in 1978.
Perine has 1,428 rushing yards on the season, a figure that already ranks as the eighth-best seasonal mark in OU history with two games yet to play. The only freshman to post more rushing yards in a single campaign was Adrian Peterson, who set the FBS freshman mark with 1,915 yards in 2004. Perine's 19 rushing touchdowns are the most-ever by a Big 12 freshman and are only four shy of the Oklahoma single-season record of 23 established by Sims in 1978.
