The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame announced its 15 semifinalists for the 2014 Jim Thorpe Award on Monday, including Oklahoma sophomore cornerback Zack Sanchez. The Jim Thorpe Award is presented annually to the top defensive back in college football.
The Ft. Worth, Texas, native leads the Big 12 with five interceptions and is tied for third in the nation. Sanchez is one of two members of the Big 12 to receive semifinalist recognition, joining TCU's Sam Carter. Sanchez and Virginia Tech's Kendall Fuller are the only two sophomores to make the list of 15 semifinalists.
The Jim Thorpe Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. Sanchez seeks to join Derrick Strait (2003), Roy Williams (2001) and Rickey Dixon (1987) as previous Sooners to win the accolade.
