A bike versus car accident last Monday has claimed the life of a long-time fixture in the Skyline Neighborhood.

Gene Lemmons, 60, died Monday, one week after being struck by a car while he was riding his bike at N.W. 36th and Drexel.

Friends and neighbors remember Lemmons for his active role helping around his neighborhood. News 9 was told Lemmons made his living detailing cars, mowing lawns and walking neighbors’ dogs.

Even though friends told us Lemmons had physical and mental disabilities, he was very active at Putnam City Baptist Church, where he also sang in the choir.

“He had every reason not to be involved,” said Senior Pastor Bill Hulse. “He didn’t have transportation, had a pretty difficult economic life you know, and yet he just wanted to be engaged.”

Despite his limitations, Lemmons had been taking karate lessons recently. David Perkins was his instructor.

“He had such a passion for things, and not just martial arts, but everything he did,” Perkins said.

Gene Lemmons’ heroes were Billy Graham and Chuck Norris.

Friends told us he read the bible everyday. In fact, they say he was actually riding his bike home from a bible study at Dunkin' Donuts last Monday when the accident occurred.

Lemmons lingered in a coma at OU Medical Center for a week. His funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Friday at Putnam City Baptist Church.
