Common Core Bill Waiting On Governor Mary Fallin's Desk

It was one of the most controversial topics at the state capitol this session and now it all rests with Governor Fallin.

The governor will have to decide this week whether to sign a bill repealing the rigorous common core standards.

Both the House and Senate passed HB3399 repealing Common Core the last day of session. Now the Governor has until Saturday to either veto or sign it.

The governor's spokesperson says the she is taking several days to meet with parents and educators to discuss how the bill would affect Oklahoma children and Oklahoma schools.

Both sides of the issue are making sure the Governor knows how they feel.

Jamie Minter, a long time elementary school teacher, has been sending out e-mails and posting on social media almost daily to try and convince Governor Fallin to sign HB3399.

"My main concern is the reach the federal government has over what we're teaching," said Minter said of her concerns of Common Core.

She along with Angela Little, a parent, and about 4000 other teachers and parents in their group have all been reaching out the Governor.

"She's put out a message saying she wants input from teachers and parents," said Little. "We're attempting to do that, I don't know if it will help but that's what we're attempting to do."

But on the other side: the Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administrators represents about 2500 school administrators say they've been urging the governor to veto the bill.

"We've alerted our members and asked them to call," said Steven Crawford, CCOSA Executive Director.

 Crawford says they don't necessarily support Common Core, but repealing it now will just create uncertainty for schools.

"It will create chaos for districts that have invested heavily, gone down this path," said Crawford. "You've got your teachers all geared up and everyone is ready to implement fully and all of a sudden you can't use them."

If Governor Fallin signs the bill Oklahoma would be the second state in the nation to repeal common core.

The state chamber has also been very vocal in their support of Common Core standards.
