Ryan Spangler waited more than a year and a half to play in a college basketball game, but his wait proved worth it. The Oklahoma men's basketball sophomore forward was named Co-Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Monday following his stellar debut in the Sooners' win over Alabama on Friday.
Spangler, a transfer from Gonzaga who sat out last season per NCAA transfer regulations, was 7-for-11 from the field and finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds in OU's 82-73 season-opening victory over the Crimson Tide in Dallas, Texas. The 15 points and 12 boards were career highs and Spangler added two steals for good measure.
Five of Spangler's 12 rebounds came on the offensive end as the Sooners recorded 17 second-chance points on the day. Spangler played 30 minutes in the contest without committing a turnover.
The win was OU's 11th straight to open a season and came at the Buckets and Boots Showcase at American Airlines Center. The Sooners fell behind 26-10 but outscored Alabama 72-47 the final 31:40.
Spangler, from Tuttle, Okla., shared the Newcomer of the Week honor with Iowa State senior guard DeAndre Kane. ISU's Naz Long was named Big 12 Player of the Week.
Spangler and the Sooners are back in action tonight for their home opener when they host North Texas at 7 p.m.
