Choctaw Man Says Credit Card Stolen From Mailbox

A long-time Choctaw High School teacher turned to News 9 for help Wednesday, after he says nearly $5,000 in purchases he never made showed up on his Discover Card. 

Royce Burch says he requested a new Discover Card several months ago, after his old card became frayed. 

Burch says a new card never arrived, but $4,700 in purchases from stores in Edmond did show up on his Discover statement. Birch says he suspects someone stole his new card from his mailbox. 

Police say the first thing you should do if you are victimized by identity theft is file a police report with your local police department.  

Royce Burch did that, and he also bought a new mailbox that locks.

"That's what the post office suggested we do," he said.  

Police also say identity theft victims should also notify the three credit agencies—TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian—to put a fraud alert on their credit reports. 

The numbers for those credit agencies are 1-800-880-7289 for TransUnion, 1-800-525-6285 for Equifax, and 1-888-397-3742 for Experian.
