The No. 16-ranked Lubbock Christian University Chaps got two quality pitching performances and an offensive explosion in the second game to sweep a doubleheader from the Mid-America Christian University Evangels in the Sooner Athletic Conference opener for both schools Thursday afternoon (Mar. 7) at James Curtis Field.
The Chaps took the opener 4-0 and then routed the Evangels 17-0 in the second game.
The Evangels received a solid start from Brett Lamb in the first game, who lasted the full seven innings and gave up three earned runs.
But Lamb was outdueled by Derek Loera, as Loera blanked the Evangels on only four hits with 12 strikeouts.
A mammoth blast by Brett Kauten in the first inning got the Chaps on the board and an RBI single by Kevin Domrzalski in the fourth made it 2-0.
The Chaps then tacked on two more insurance runs in the fifth inning.
MACU aided the Chaps in the first inning of the nightcap with two errors that led to a four-run inning.
It was 5-0 when LCU erupted for six runs in the third inning to put it away.
Kyle Forsyth and Ethan Murphy combined to shut out the Evangels on only three hits with six strikeouts, including five punch outs by Murphy.
Joel Lutz paced the Chaps' in the second game with two hits and four RBI.
The two schools will wrap up the four-game series with another doubleheader tomorrow (Mar. 8) starting at noon.
