Taylor Spears, Madison Mooring and Haley Scaman earned the first Big 12 weekly gymnastics awards of the 2013 season, as announced by the conference Tuesday. Spears is the Gymnast of the Week recipient, while Mooring and Scaman collect Event Specialist of the Week and Newcomer of the Week honors, respectively.
Spears picked up her third Gymnast of the Week honor and seventh weekly accolade overall. This is Mooring's third weekly award and the first recognition for Scaman.
In OU's victory over No. 11 Georgia on Saturday, Spears won the all-around title with a 39.375 score, her career-best road mark. The junior from Plano, Texas, carried the Sooners in a comeback win in front of more than 7,000 fans, setting team-high scores on beam and bars. Spears helped OU to a 196.450 team score, the highest season-opening score in team history.
Mooring, a junior from Sallisaw, Okla., was inserted into the floor lineup late for an injured teammate, then tied a career high score of 9.85 in the event in OU's comeback win on the road at No. 11 Georgia. Mooring added scores of 9.8 on vault and 9.825 on beam to help the Sooners to their first-ever win in Athens.
Competing in her first collegiate meet, Scaman took the meet floor title with a score of 9.875 and tied for the top score on bars to help OU earn its first-ever win over Georgia in Athens. A native of Riverside, Ill., the freshman also added a score of 9.8 on vault.
The Sooners will next compete on Friday at 3 p.m. at Arizona State, with OU's first home meet slated for Jan. 18 against Denver.
