18 Wind Turbines Now Spinning Above OKC Research Tower

The Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation flips the switch on some new technology.

Tuesday, the foundation released the brakes on 18 new vertical wind turbines. The 18 and a half foot tall turbines are shaped like the DNA OMRF scientists study. The turbines will create an estimated 85,000 kilowatt hours of energy a year. That's enough to power seven average sized houses for a year.

"We wanted the rooftop of our new tower to have that same symbolism that we are trying to be energy efficient," said Dr. Stephen Prescott, OMRF President. "We're trying to care about the environment, lower our carbon footprint, if you will, and we also think they look nice as well."

The turbines and the installation were paid for through a gift.
