Prescription drug abuse kills Oklahomans each year. That's why Cleveland County Sheriff Joe Lester and deputies are tackling the problem head-on and giving citizens a chance to rid their homes of expired or unwanted medications.
People are urged to gather all old and unused prescriptions and bring them to the Prescription Drug Round-up 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 16. Sheriff's deputies will collect medications at the following businesses:
• Homeland, 10700 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Oklahoma City
• Homeland, 1251 Alameda Street in Norman
• Homeland, 2600 W. Robinson Street, Norman
• Crest Foods, 1315 N. Eastern Ave., Moore
Once prescriptions are collected, they will be taken to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and destroyed.
Sheriff Lester said ridding medicine cabinets of excess amounts of medications keeps them out of the wrong hands.
"I'm very concerned about the rate of prescription drug abuse in the state," Lester said. "I hope that everyone will help this department as we battle this epidemic and keep Cleveland County a safe place to live for its citizens."
The Prescription Drug Round-up program was established in 2009. Round-ups are sponsored quarterly.
