The Oklahoma Sooners clinched a share of the Big 12 championship Saturday with a 12-1 win over the Iowa State Cyclones, while Lauren Chamberlain broke the Big 12 record for home runs in a season.
The freshman infielder blasted two home runs in the win, a solo home run to tie the game in the top of the third and a two-run home run in the top of the fourth – the second of the inning – to give the Sooners a 5-1 advantage.
Oklahoma expanded its lead later in the inning, hanging three of its 11, fourth-inning runs on a pair of singles from Brittany Williams and Katie Norris to take an 8-1 advantage.
Michelle Gascoigne (16-1) was credited with a win for her work, giving up one earned run – a solo home run in the bottom of the second – on two hits in three innings of service. Lauren Kennewell (0-3) picked up her third loss of the season, allowing three earned runs on five hits in three innings.
Oklahoma will close out the regular season at noon Sunday, before heading into the Norman Regional of the NCAA Tournament Friday.
