The Oklahoma State Cowgirls got a measure of payback Saturday against the Texas Longhorns, making up for a narrow loss Friday with a convincing 3-0 win in the second game of the weekend series.
Simone Freeman (7-6) was solid for Oklahoma State in her outing, giving up just four hits and striking out four in 5.2 innings of service. Kat Espinosa came in to close things out and earned a save, giving up one hit and striking out one in 1.1 innings pitched.
The Longhorns gave the start to Kim Bruins, who turned in a 5.2 inning performance, giving up three earned runs on 10 hits in the loss.
Oklahoma State started the scoring early, thanks to single from Shelby Davis in the first at-bat of the game. The leadoff hitter advanced to second on a ground out, third via a single and came home thanks to a line-out from Julie Ward to take a 1-0 lead.
The bats remained quiet until the sixth inning, but hung two on the board to give themselves some breathing room. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases and Sammy Jo Diffendaffer hit a sacrifice fly to advance the runners and score Chelsea Garcia. Ari Morrison singled back to the pitcher in the next at-bat to bring Amy Graham home to take a 3-0 advantage.
The two squads will square off for the rubber game at 11 a.m. Sunday, before the Cowgirls take on Oklahoma for the final Bedlam game of the year.
