A man is dead after authorities say he tried to run over an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper. The officer-involved shooting took place at about 2 a.m. Sunday in Moore.
The trooper was working a DUI patrol near U.S. Interstate 35 and 19th in Moore when he spotted a man driving his pickup erratically, according to Lieutenant George Brown with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
The trooper tried to make a traffic stop, and there was a short pursuit after the pickup driver refused to pull over.
At about 8th and Tower, a passenger in the truck ran from the vehicle. The trooper got out of his car to chase the passenger, and the pickup truck driver tried to run him down, Brown said.
The trooper opened fire on the pickup, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Brown said the passenger was located and taken into custody for questioning. He was released without charges.
The trooper was not injured in the incident. He has been placed on paid, routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
"We've got crime scene investigators mapping the scene," Brown said Sunday morning. "They'll compile a report and submit their findings to the chief's office."
The identity of the suspected DUI driver has not yet been released.
