OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Sooners bounced back well and beat Kansas State after a disappointing loss and receiving high marks in this week's report card.
The two teams started the game relatively even, with Kansas State taking a 17-14 lead in the second quarter. But OU dominated both sides of the ball after halftime, leading to 44 consecutive points and a blowout win.
Landry Jones set a school record with 505 passing yards, and the defense only allowed 32 total yards and four first downs in the second half. But special teams remained an area of concern.
Michael Hunnicutt hit a 53-yard field goal and Tress Way pinned two punts inside the 20-yard line, but OU continued to have problems in kickoff coverage. As a seeming acknowledgement of those struggles, the Sooners elected to try squib kicks early in the game.
Squib kicks are designed to prevent long returns, but the Sooners still allowed a big run across midfield on a kick in the first half. They also kicked another out of bounds, giving Kansas State great field position again.
