Honestly, I've been torn about this 2 Cents tonight, I think what bothers me most about it is the political and cultural tone deafness of those involved.
The Spanish teacher at a high school in McAllen, Texas required her students to learn, and then stand and recite the Mexican pledge of allegiance as a class assignment. At least one student refused to do it.
I understand the point of the assignment, to learn the language and some about the culture, but this was in a town 10 miles from the Mexican border.
I've reported from that area on the illegal immigrants pouring across the border, and believe me those people are fed up with it. Many of them feel like that part of Texas is already becoming Mexico North.
Certainly, I believe learning Spanish is an excellent idea, but I wonder if instead of reciting the Mexican pledge, they could have learned the United States pledge of allegiance in Spanish.
I don't know that might have been equally divisive.
I'll be curious to see what you think.
