State Treasurer Looks To Return Millions At Oklahoma State Fair

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma Treasurer Ken Miller is looking to give away about $350 million in unclaimed property.

The treasurer and his employees have a list of 600,000 Oklahomans that are owed the unclaimed property, and they'll be staffing a booth in the Cox Pavilion throughout the fair in Oklahoma City to help reunite fair goers with their money.

This year marks the start of the second decade that the office has operated the "Pot of Gold" booth at the annual Oklahoma State Fair. Last year, almost $400,000 was found for 570 people attending the fair.

"Oklahoma's economy would get a big shot in the arm if we were able to reunite 600,000 state residents with $350 million," Miller said. "If you go to the fair this year, you need to stop by our booth to see if we have any of your money. Remember, too, that our service is free."

Examples of unclaimed property include bank accounts, security deposits, old paychecks, royalties, rebates, stock and bonds. The contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes are also included.

The cash and property are turned over to the State Treasurer's office when the businesses holding them lose track of the owners.
