NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – The Oklahoma City Redhawks put together a three-run ninth inning to overtake the New Orleans Zephyrs 7-6 on Monday.
Third baseman Chris Johnson finished 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, including the go-ahead RBI for the win.
The Zephyrs scored first, opening the game with a three-run first inning. Donnie Murphy doubled, then Jorge Padilla knocked a two-run double to make it 3-0.
OKC responded in the second when Johnson belted a solo home run to left centerfield making it 3-1.
Both teams added runs in the fourth. For the Redhawks, Johnson hit a double to plate a run, while New Orleans catcher Brad Davis singled to score a run for the Zephyrs who still led 4-2.
New Orleans added to their lead with a two-run fifth inning, while OKC began to rally. Left fielder Jack Shuck led off with a double and scored on a Jake Goebbert single to make it 6-3. Then in the eighth, pinch hitter Drew Locke doubled in a run for a 6-4 score.
The Redhawks capped off the rally in the ninth. First Brett Wallace singled in a run to make it 6-5, then Shuck tied the game at 6-6 before Johnson doubled in the third run for the 7-6 OKC win.
RedHawks reliever Ross Wolf (4-3) allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth inning for the winning decision. Zephyrs reliever Corey Madden (1-2) allowed the three-run ninth inning for the loss. Jeff Fulchino (3) saved the game with a perfect ninth inning.
RedHawks left hander and Tulsa native Dallas Keuchel will face New Orleans right hander Elih Villanueva in game two of the series Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. CT.
