TULSA, Oklahoma – The Berryhill Chiefs are coming off a disappointing season, but are only two years removed from an appearance in the state championship game. They hope and expect the coming season will resemble the latter.
The Chiefs began last season on a hot streak, won four consecutive games and scored at least 45 points in each of them. But they struggled after that, losing three of their final five games and limping into the playoffs. There they lost a heartbreaker 17-14 to end their season.
"Last year was a huge disappointment and we're looking to do better this year," center Aaron David said.
The Chiefs will return several starters on both sides of the ball and will rely on a bevy of seniors for leadership.
"We've got a good group of seniors, and they've got a chance to do something special this year," head coach Pat Harper said.
With that core of experienced leaders intact, expectations are running high.
"I think we have a real shot [at winning a championship]," linebacker Aaron Dolen said. "We've got the players to do it; we just gotta buckle down and work as a team … We haven't won it since '04, and we want to bring back a state title."
The Chiefs will start their hopeful championship run on Sept. 2 against Glenpool. Their biggest game of the year will come on Oct. 6 when they face off with powerhouse Cascia Hall.
