CASHION, Oklahoma -- With the changes in Cashion's volunteer fire department, local firefighters in the surrounding area are expected to be busier at work.
"We've made a pact with other volunteer fire departments to help Cashion," Lt. Matt Gibson, a Deer Creek firefighter, said.
On Wednesday morning, a grassfire burned near N.W. 220th and McArthur down the street from the Deer Creek fire department. With the strong winds and hot and dry conditions, firefighters called for mutual aid from Cashion and Piedmont.
"This morning's fire is a perfect example of us needing mutual aid," said Gibson. "It took us about an hour to put out the fire because we don't have enough manpower. With the weekday schedules from Monday to Friday, we're all short staffed and we couldn't get other volunteer fire department like Cashion to come out."
