OKLAHOMA CITY – While summer is months away, some brave people took a dip in the frigid waters at White Water Bay, but it's all for a good cause.
Nine people, dubbed the Super Plungers, put their health on the line by jumping into the pool - 24 times. They've each raised over $1,000 for the Special Olympics.
On Friday they jumped into the freezing cold water every hour and then raced out to a nearby hot tub.
And Saturday almost 200 hearty souls were to dive in for the 20th annual Polar Bear Plunge, all benefiting the Special Olympics. Their goal this year is to raise more than $200,000.
Scott Moore, Special Olympics Oklahoma board member, said his teenage son teenage son, Zach was among the 189 plungers on Saturday.
"Zach got New Castle School involved in the Cool Schools program. He signed up six or seven of his peers to raise money and take the plunge with him as a team. Getting his peers involved at this school was very important to him so they could see what a difference working and volunteering for Special Olympics makes in the lives of so many people with intellectual disabilities," Moore said.
The brave souls who took the plunge created personal web pages to seek donations from friends and family. To support one of these individuals, see how the pledges are accumulating, or to become a Polar Plunger, visit http://specialolympicsoklahoma.org/ and click on the Polar Plunge link.
