Oklahoma Bureau Of Narcotics Creates Drop Off Boxes For Safe Prescription Drug Disposal

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Drug agents in Oklahoma say prescription drug abuse is a growing cancer in the state.

Tuesday, the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics unveiled a new tool to cut down on the amount of prescription drugs floating around. The OBN created drop off boxes to safely dispose of prescription drugs around the state. They will be placed in police departments and sheriff's offices.

"One requirement we're going to have of our friends in law enforcement is that they're secure. They're bolted to the floor or bolted to the wall. We obviously do not want something we're trying to do for the good to end up being something for the bad," said OBN Director Darrell Weaver.

Of the more than 500 deadly overdoses in Oklahoma in 2009, 84 percent were because of prescription drugs.
