OKLAHOMA CITY – On January 27, 2001, a plane carrying ten members of the OSU basketball family crashed in Colorado, changing the lives of countless people.
The twin-engine Beech King Air 200 went down about 30 miles east of Denver during a light snow.
News 9's Alex Cameron saw the wreckage in Byers, Colorado firsthand.
He reported as investigators looked into the causes of the accident and spoke to Daryl Haerther, the owner of the property where the plane went down.
At the time, Hearther told Cameron he wanted to use a portion of his land to erect a memorial in honor of the 10 men lost that day.
Since then, Haerther has worked with Oklahoma State University to make the monument a reality.
The memorial now sits on Haerther's land, only 1,000 feet from where the crash occurred.
Made of granite and marble, it is decorated with pictures of the 10 men who died in the crash and words chosen by their families.
It honors Denver Mills, Nate Fleming, Dan Lawson, Jared Weiberg, Pat Noyes, Bill Teegins, Will Hancock, Brian Luinstra, Kendall Durfey and Bjorn Fahlstrom.
