BETHANY, Oklahoma – There are changes in the works for the historic Lake Overholser Bridge on Old Route 66 just outside of Bethany.
The bridge has been blocked off and open to only foot and bicycle traffic, but now crews are working to refurbish the bridge.
The plan is to keep the bridge preserved and close to the original state as possible. Eventually, it will reopen to vehicles.
The bridge was built in 1924 before Route 66 and was mentioned in John Steinbeck's novel, "The Grapes of Wrath."
You can easily go around the bridge on the current road and pick up Route 66 just to the west of the bridge, follow the road around the lake and back into Yukon at Mustang Road.
