OKLAHOMA CITY -- Police said a man is in critical condition after he was shot by police near N.W. 12th Street and McKinley Avenue.
The man has been identified as 26-year-old Heath George Nearon.
Officers from the Department's Gang Unit were investigating suspicious activity in the area. Officers were talking with a group of people at a house in northwest Oklahoma City around 11:06 p.m. Saturday when they said Nearon approached them, holding a knife.
The officers said they repeatedly told Nearon to put the knife down, but when he didn't and continued to approach the officers, one of the officers discharged his weapon, hitting the man.
That officer has been identified as 32-year-old Sergeant Bradley B. Jones, a 9-year veteran with the OCPD.
"He was screaming and yelling. Not exactly sure what he was saying, but he was acting in an irrational manner," said Oklahoma City Police Capt. Patrick Stewart.
Nearon was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Jones has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Nearon's criminal history includes domestic abuse and violating a protective order.
