Oklahoma City Council, Mayor Agree to Personal Pay Cuts

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Mayor Mick Cornett and Oklahoma City Council members promised to take pay cuts if city workers are forced to do the same.

A resolution passed 6 votes to 1 despite Oklahoma City Ward 7 City Councilman Skip Kelly's vocal objections.

"I didn't cause the sales tax to go in this city. I didn't do that. So I'm not personally responsible for the fact that the budget is what it is, and I'm not personally responsible for whether or not we get sales up or down. That's not my responsibility," Kelly said.

The pay cuts are strictly voluntary, and would amount to $50 a month for council members and $100 a month for the mayor. The money will be donated to city coffers.

"We can't in good conscious ask our employees to take a cut in pay or be laid off if we're not willing to join in the effort," said Patrick Ryan, Oklahoma City City Council Ward 8.
