LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A third straight day of summerlike heat is expected today in much of California.
The National Weather Service says it will be cooler along the coast, but valleys and mountain areas will stay warm.
The heat will ease in Northern California, with some rain predicted for later in the week.
Temperatures reached 100 degrees yesterday in downtown Los Angeles, breaking the previous record of 96 set for the date in 1958. San Francisco set a new mark at an unseasonable 93 degrees.
Triple-digit readings also occurred elsewhere across Southern California, including 103 at Santa Ana and Riverside.
Sunday's 94 degree high in downtown Los Angeles also broke a 95-year-old record.
