Football player shot at practice

BRAY, Okla. - A 7th grader in Stephens County is recovering after getting shot at football practice Thursday.

The shooting occurred around 2:40 p.m.

Amanda Lambert, another player's mother, said it was a scene no mother wants to drive up to.

"I was like, ‘Is that my kid out there on that field?" Lambert said. "No one was telling me anything."

The child wasn't Lamberts, but another seventh-grader. The child was immediately taken to the Duncan Regional Hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to his buttocks and thigh.

"So far, we think it was a possible hunter getting ready for deer season," Superintendent Kevin McKinley said.

Parents continued to seek answers to their questions about the incident.

"I want to know where it came from. I want to know who was out shooting a gun this close to school," one parent said.

There were around 20 children on the field during the time of the shooting, and her son was standing next to the victim when the shot rang out.

"He heard the gun shot, heard the bullet, saw the kid drop and ran into the school to have them call 911," Lambert said. "He'll probably have nightmares for awhile."

The student was released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Students were not scheduled to attend school the following day due to a parent-teacher conference day, but McKinley said counselors will be on hand Monday for the students.
