Storms batter Oklahoma, bringing tornadoes, floods

OKLAHOMA CITY --A National Weather Service meteorologist says at least one tornado touched down in Oklahoma Wednesday night as a powerful storm system brought hail, heavy rains and flooding to parts of the state, resulting in one death.

National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Taylor in Norman said there had been two reports of a tornado in Choctaw County in far southeastern Oklahoma about 7:15 p.m., although no damage was reported.

He said the two reports possibly could have been connected with the same tornado.

The weather service's offices in Norman, Tulsa and Shreveport, La., had issued more than a dozen tornado warnings by 10 p.m., but no other twisters had been reported.

The storm's first fatality in Oklahoma was an Apache woman who was involved in a one-vehicle accident while driving in heavy rain shortly after noon in Caddo County.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the vehicle driven by 62-year-old Pamela Bobelu was northbound on U.S. Highway 62 when it hydroplaned, left the roadway and struck a pole and a tree.
