In 2006, Kern called for Oklahoma teachers to leave unions that were members from the National Education Association after she said the association endorsed homosexual marriage.

"All Oklahoma teachers who value the traditional family should send a message by leaving the Oklahoma Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers unions since both are members of the NEA and support the NEA's policies,"  Kern said in a 2006 press release. "The NEA is replacing academic fundamentals with liberal propaganda and trying to indoctrinate little children in our schools. That is unacceptable."
