FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. -- John McCain is planning to tread on rival Rudy Giuliani's home turf.
The Arizona senator is heading to the Empire State to pick up an endorsement from the former New York mayor's longtime nemesis. McCain is winning a nod from Alfonse D'Amato, a former New York senator long at odds with Giuliani.
McCain started the day with rallies in Florida, where the GOP presidential contender promised to fix the veterans health care system.
Polls show the Arizona senator leading or tied with the hometown candidate in New York. Giuliani once held enormous sway over his home state and its 101-delegate prize, but has seen support there erode as he ignored and lost six-straight primary contests.
Giuliani is also ducking out of Florida to drum up money in New York at a private fundraiser. He has staked his candidacy on winning the January 29th primary in the Sunshine State.
